Does this seem familiar?
Do you recognize the orange lamp in Yuri Yuri’s room in Hajimete Koi wo Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi?
That’s because it’s actually a common “modern room” prop used in multiple drama. Now, reusing prop and sets are pretty common for Japanese dramas but this one is unique among the group of reused props.
First, Hajikoi was a TBS drama. But this also showed up in a Fuji TV drama, Mada Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, in Kuwano’s room.
I’m surprised to see this used in dramas across different networks.
Second, this prop has been around forever.
This is the opening scene of Junrenka by Shonan no Kaze (official youtube MV). This was released in 2006 so it has been used as a prop for at least 14 years!
Now, you may think– Maybe they just have multiple of this? But this lamp is called Taliesin (Wayfair page) and costs $2200!! I can’t imagine this is a prop they’d have multiple lying around…
I assume the Taliesin lamp is named after Frank Llyod Wright’s Taliesin West School of Architecture. Frank Llyod Wright was an architect famous for his cantilever design– meaning if you run planks long enough, and place enough weight on one side, you can have an overhang without any support. If you look at his Fallingwater house, you can see how the lamp resembles the shape of his architecture.
I’m a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and I’ve visited both Fallingwater and Taliesin West personally. I always have fun spotting this lamp in various Japanese dramas I translate.
